Dear Serious Traveler,

Thanks for your interest in this exciting tour which combines two of the modern day Stans: Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan with an option to begin in the Ferghana Valley. Other continuing options are Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, or Iran! See page 7.

This is a part of the legendary Great Silk Road that stretched from Xi’an (Chang’an) in China to Kashgar, continued west through Central Asia and Iran to the Caspian en route to its ultimate western terminus, the Roman Empire in Europe. Conquerors such as Darius, Cyrus Alexander, Genghis Khan, Tamarlane and Babur all led military missions and left their marks. More recently control of Central Asia contested by the Russians and British in what became known as the “Great Game”.

Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta explored this area. As modern-day travelers, you can be a part of the vast flow of explorers, writers, conquerors, academicians and theologians as well as traders who have traversed these routes. Although we have operated tours to Uzbekistan for many years, this very special trip connects a less traveled but fascinating segment in ancient Khorezm.

In the Jewels of the Silk Road, we’ll fly to Tashkent aboard the comfort of Turkish Airlines. Explore the Uzbek cities of Samarkand and Bukhara. We travel westward along the Amu Darya River (Oxus) to Khiva, one of the most ancient capitals of the world. Continue through Khorezm, which produced such thinkers and poets as Omar Khayyám, Saadi, Hafez, Ferdosi, and Ibn Sina, to the capital of Turkmenistan. From there we make an excursion by flight to Merv (Mary). Those who have already traveled to Iran recognize many of these names, since Khorezm was a part of the greater Persian Empire.

You may conclude your tour in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan or continue to the Iranian border where we explore Mashad before flying to Tehran. Return home via Istanbul. Alternate airlines and routings may be available. See page 8 of the brochure.
